THE UNDERGROUND SCHOOL OF CONTEMPORARY ART is a one-month-long safe haven for artistic experiment and intellectual exchange.
USCA occupies a 2000m² industrial space at 30 meters below street level. USCA’s main goal is to provide a lively, multi-facetted platform for on-the-spot creative practice and scholarship.
The school offers artist’s studios, art and art theory classes, in situ art production, lectures and debates, exhibition opportunities, curatorial education and residencies, film screenings, an in-house collection of contemporary art, research opportunities, a library, live music sessions, and more.
The project was founded by the independent Curator Jan Van Woensel, with mynd collective as assistent-curator. It is in collaboration with Closer/dichterbij 2016 and vzw Den Tunnel.

USCA provides studios for artists-in-residence. Both emerging and established artists work on new and ongoing projects.

Meet USCA’s current residents: Stijn Dierckx (painter, writer), Lindert Paulussen (painter), Els Dejonghe (writer), Jelle Nicolaï (silkscreen artist), Bert Villa (architect, artist), Wouter van de Koot (painter), Rosa Schützendorf (photography, installation, performance) Adam Galach (in-situ), Carolina Tafalla (multi-disciplinar), mynd (curators collective) and Curator Jan Van Woensel (artistic director of USCA)
