Bio

Wouter van de Koot (1978°), lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium. In 2001 he obtained a BA in Visual Arts at the Utrecht School of Arts, followed in 2018 by a MA in painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, after which he went on to win the Award of Buggenhout- Kunstprijs Pieter Vanneste for Drawing and
Printmaking 2018. Recent exhibitions include solo and duo shows at Gallery Vriend van Bavink, This Art Fair, and Gasunie (NL).

Statement

“In my paintings I have always been drawn to the theatrical drama found in religious rituals, mythology or history. The human form with its vulerability and beauty, its lust and its mystery, have long fascinated me.

In my recent work though, I have turned away from the body, painting portraits of natural phenomena like clouds, explosions, smoke, jellyfish or light. They entice me to capture their ever changing shapes in paint. Their evasive, translucent and dramatic nature provide a huge challenge: to capture movement in stillness.  The antagonists are often painted against a backdrop of fictional, constructed landscapes, taken from existing paintings or illustrations.

I love the sensitivity and flow of watercolour and inks. The water is never completely predictable. To try and control or manipulate something as alive as water brings me great satisfaction.”
