Bio
Wouter van de Koot (1978°) is a Dutch painter living and working in Antwerp, Belgium. After a first stint at the Utrecht School of Arts in the late 1990s, he obtained an MA in painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp in 2018. That year he also won the Buggenhout Art Prize Pieter Vanneste for Drawing and Printmaking. He has exhibited in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad.
Statement
I have always been attracted to the theatrical drama in religious rituals, mythology or history, and its reflections in everyday life. The human body, with its fragility and beauty, its lust and strength, continue to fascinate me, as well as the way people have depicted themselves through the ages in the form of paintings and sculptures.
I like to work in a very direct way, often without an underdrawing. I love the sensitivity of the first thin layers of paint and the combination of different techniques within a single painting..
My imagery is rooted in personal experiences, fears, dreams and desires that I connect to (art) historical themes and characters. They often find themselves in fictional landscapes, where they seem to participate in mysterious rituals, moving between the mundane and the obscure. I like to use myself and the people around me as models and combine this with found footage and art historical quotations.
